The Virginia Karate Alliance (V.K.A.) rates both black belts and under black belts.
A V.K.A. member may compete at, and earn points at any karate tournament that is officially sanctioned by V.K.A. A member who places in the top 8 in 5A and 4A Tournament top 4 in 3A and 2A Tournament receives points toward their rating. One person from each of the 118 categories will be awarded VA State Champion.

The season begins January 1st and ends November 31st.  Players will not receive points until they join VKA and receive no points for earlier tournaments.  No points will be recorded for non-members.

Points are tallied and published online at the website address listed below and available at each VKA tournament.  At the end of the season, final points will be tabulated and a banquet will be held.  The Virginia State Champions will be named and awards will be given for all places.  Twelve (12) events will make up the VKA calendar in 2005.  A maximum of nine (9) events may be used toward the division championship.  If a competitor attends more than nine (9) events, the best nine (9), in each division, will count.

Membership cost is included with participation in the January 28th VKA tournament.  Sign-ups after January 30th will cost $25.

The VKA is a point gathering organization with the purpose of recognizing a State Champion in pre-determined divisions.  Specific rules for tournament competition are totally decided by the tournament promoter and questions about tournament rules should be directed to the tournament promoter.

Divisions: There will be 1 person from each of 118 categories that will be awarded VA State Champion. You are competing to be the best competitor in a category; for example, 6-8 Beginner Kata category. If you are 8 and a tournament offers 6-7 Beginner Kata and 8-9 Beginner Kata, compete at your appropriate age and rank, and your points will be placed in the appropriate category for the VKA. In this case, there may be two first place points awarded for the 6-8 Beginner Kata category. This goes for all categories.

Belt Rank: You must compete at the level that you currently are on the day of the tournament (a) If you switch categories during the season, you may carry ¾ of your points with you to the next group, OR ( b) If you know you will be moving up in belt rank, you can compete up to the next category for the entire competition season.

Note: No points may be carried from under belt divisions to Black Belt Division

Age: You must compete at the age you are on March 2nd of the competition season.
